Summary
The problem being addressed - how to ensure that the risks and opportunities of adapting to the inevitable changes in weather are built into long term regional policy and investments?
Sustainability West Midlands has championed this agenda in the region and has ensured it is now resourced and taken forward as a mainstream activity by the Environment Agency acting on behalf of the Regional Climate Change Office.
Sustainability West Midlands now sits on the West Midlands Climate Adaptation Partnership chaired by the Regional Climate Adaptation Coordinator supported by the Environment Agency and Advantage West Midlands.
Update on the progress of the project
Climate Adaptation 2004-5
Sustainability West Midlands worked with partners to produce a regional study of the climate impacts on the West Midlands.
Climate Adaptation 2005-6
Sustainability West Midlands, Severn Trent and partners created a Climate Adaption partnership which coordinated a range of research, events and good practice. This included working with the UK Climate Impacts Programme to conduct the UK's first climate impacts risk assessment of a Regional Development Agency investment programme.
Climate Adaptation 2006-7
Regional Climate Adaptation Coordinator appointed for a year, and hosted by Sustainability West Midlands. They coordinated the partnership and focused on mainstreaming climate adaption work into the development of the new Regional Climate Change Action Plan, Spatial Strategy and Economic Strategy, the evidence base for the Economic Strategy, and the Sustainability Appraisal, Future Proofing, and Sustainability Planning Checklist Tools being developed by Sustainability West Midlands.
Climate Adaptation 2007-8
Sustainability West Midlands supports the Environment Agency to become the regional lead on adaption on behalf of the region. This involves the Environment Agency and Advantage West Midlands appointing a new Regional Adaptation Coordinator, hosted by the Environment Agency and delivering the Climate Adaptation work stream for the new Climate Change Office.
Climate Adaptation 2008-9
Sustainability West Midlands reviews current Climate Adaptation Partnership with the Environment Agency as part of wider research on adaption within the region. As a result the existing partnership is disbanded and reconfigured as the West Midlands Climate Adaptation Partnership to reflect the new needs of the region.
Climate Adaptation 2009-10
Sustainability West Midlands acts as a member and adviser on the West Midlands Climate Adaptation Partnership.
