Summary

The problem being addressed - how can the region identify and promote good leadership practice in sustainable development to leaders within the region and nationally?

Sustainability West Midlands is the strategic lead within the West Midlands Economic Strategy on the objective and actions that cover promoting good practice on sustainable development within the region.

Update on the progress of the project

Regional Leaders Awards 2008-9

Sustainability West Midlands' review of progress on the promotion of good sustainable development practice by the actions of partners within the first year of the West Midlands Regional Economic Strategy reveals uncoordinated activity and lack of focus.

As a result Sustainability West Midlands ensures a major part of our new focus and business plan is on sharing success. We begin to scope the best way of doing this and identify the poor promotion of future or green leaders within the region. In consultation with our members the idea of a Top 50 green leaders award is born.

Regional Leaders Awards 2009-10

300 years ago, men and women from the West Midlands started the Industrial Revolution. In 2010, who are the new leaders who will start the green revolution we all require?

We have been working with a number of partners and members to design the criteria for the competition to identify what criteria would our future leaders need to being doing to be successful in 2020.

This competition was launched by Jonathan Porritt at the annual lecture of the Lunar Society who described it as a great opportunity to raise the profile of our leaders around the West Midlands and create a peer group of 50 green leaders to share ideas and learn from each other. The competition will open on Monday 29 March, with nominations open until Monday 24 May.

Sustainability West Midlands and partners will work with the winners over the next year to help deliver a better future for us all, as set out in the Forum for the Future and Sustainability West Midlands report 'A low carbon vision for the West Midlands in 2020.'

(This project activity delivers our Business plan objectives around 4.9 support awards schemes and 4.12 promoting good practice case studies)
