Purpose of the report

Climate change has had a forceful impact on the manufacturing sector.  However, cutting carbon does not have to stifle economic development. Instead, the low-carbon economy offers significant opportunities that manufacturing particularly cannot afford to ignore.  In this report, Deloitte UK Manufacturing Group and EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, have collaborated to explore the opportunities and examine what developments are currently being made by UK manufacturers.  The report shows the manufacturing sector is comfortably positioned to take advantage of the business opportunities presented by the climate change combat targets.  However, it warns that this will only happen if companies are quick to identify these opportunities and move swiftly to take advantage of them, as there are many hurdles that stand between industry and a low carbon economy. It also points out that the government needs to back industry with a strategy that provides leadership, overcomes the barriers and helps develop the capabilities needed to deliver a low carbon economy.

Relevance to the region

The report identifies the potential markets for low carbon technologies, many of which could be applicable to the West Midlands region.  One area which holds particularly good prospects for industry is low carbon vehicle production.  The UK has significant expertise in a range of technologies key to the development of hybrid vehicles

What SWM liked

The barriers to the UK industry to take advantage of the low carbon economy were clearly outlined in each section, including qualitative and quantitative analysis.
