Low impact communities in Britain

Low impact communities in Britain

Date of the report

2012

Author of the report

University of Leicester

Purpose of the report

This report outlines how people are building low cost eco housing themselves, why, what makes it work, what it is like to live in them, and what the constraints and opportunities are in doing more of it in Britain.

The report uses evidence collected from over 30 low impact housing case studies worldwide to reflect upon low impact communities in Britain. It focuses primarily on new builds, but also acknowledges the vital importance of retrofitting to reducing the environmental impact of our housing.

Relevance to the region

By documenting leading examples of eco-friendly building, this report provides much needed knowledge and expertise to those in the West Midlands wishing to do the same. This is particularly important to the dense urban areas in the West Midlands which often has new building construction plans and has plenty of scope for retrofitting.

What SWM liked

Focusing on existing examples allows others to imitate this eco-friendly behaviour. This report is an excellent way to promote strategies that may otherwise be unfamiliar to those wishing to build eco-houses.
