Leadership - mind the gap?
Leadership - mind the gap?
Purpose of the presentation
The purpose of this presentation was to stimulate discussion within the Environment and Economy workshop surrounding leadership and the role of leaders. This included a comparison of various themes within the recent 'Fit for the Future' book produced by the West Midlands Regional Observatory and our Vision for the Future 2020.
The presentation also offered some emerging solutions for leaders for the future and how they can use these solutions to change the way they operate.
Relevance to the region
Leadership is crucial to the future vision for the West Midlands and any region within the United Kingdom. By collating the views from these two publications on this variety of themes from travel, work, housing and leadership it is important to see what solutions can be found. It is also very interesting to see what is included in each of the publications and what has been missed from within these themes.
What SWM liked
As one of our services states we aim 'to develop practical solutions with our members' so the final slide on 'emerging solutions for leaders' is key for us. Emerging solutions include:
- Public bodies having a 'chief scientific' officer function supported by local universities
- Regional version of 'global' elders initiative
- Competition from outside the region and globally highlighted to help rally leadership, and more common goals such as green inclusive jobs
- More job-share, mentoring between end, mid, early career leaders , secondments and 'tours of duty' to keep leadership refreshed, networked and diverse
