Our Team > Julie Pope

As Office & Stakeholder Manager for Sustainability West Midlands, I support a small but dynamic team to deliver their agenda to a wide variety of partnerships. The role demands the usual expertise in administrative processes and financial understanding, but it is also an essential conduit between the SWM team and our rising portfolio of external and internal customers. I develop and deliver campaigns for our members and networks, which are crucial for us to help shape our priorities and events to reflect what really is important for our stakeholders.

I undertook a degree in ‘Humanities’ at Birmingham University with the ambition to become a teacher but I had developed study-fatigue and decided to enter the world of work instead of going onto pursuing my post-graduate certificate. Within a year of leaving university, I had gained a position in Birmingham City Council’s Housing Department and this marked the beginning of a 16-year local government career working in Housing, Education, Heritage and Arts. I quickly learnt that I enjoyed helping people and ensuring people are kept ‘informed’, and this has always stood me in good stead, as all roles need great customer service. I believe information is power. I have had success in leading many community-engagement forums and empowering people to start their own not-for-profit enterprises with bespoke charitable business and funding plans. I have a breadth of knowledge within the third-sector and diversity and inclusion and my strength is in connecting people creatively. I keep abreast of grass-roots community initiatives and have recently undertook a freelance role as a project enabler for a inner-city Birmingham circular economy initiative, which enlightened me to the power of volunteer interest in the subject.

From a personal perspective, I have always been an ‘anti-waste’, resourceful person and have been interested environmental awareness from a young age. I am happy to say that passed this onto my teenage daughter, who enjoys upcycling and rarely throws anything away!  I am a proud born and bred Brummie and am an avid lover of the outdoors. In an ideal world, I enjoy swimming and saunas but am very happy to go exploring in country parks with my Yorkie, Dottie. I believe everyone is creative in some way and I have a real passion for music, writing and comedy.
