Our Team > Julie Pope

As the Administrator for Sustainability West Midlands, I support a small but dynamic team to deliver their agenda to a wide variety of partnerships. The role demands the usual expertise in administrative processes and financial understanding, but it is also an essential conduit between the SWM team and our rising portfolio of external customers. I help organise events and workshops and feed into communications, so that there is a real sense of ‘connectivity’ in our offer.

I undertook a degree in ‘Humanities’ at Birmingham University with the ambition to become a teacher but I had developed study-fatigue and decided to enter the world of work instead of going onto pursuing my post-graduate certificate. Within a year of leaving university, I had gained a position in Birmingham City Council’s Housing Department and this marked the beginning of a 16-year local government career working also for Education, Heritage and Arts. I quickly learnt that I enjoyed helping people, and this has always stood me in good stead as all support roles need great customer service. I have had success in leading many community-engagement forums and empowering people to start their own not-for-profit enterprises with bespoke charitable business and funding plans. I believe information is power.

From a personal perspective, I have always been an ‘anti-waste’, resourceful person and have been interested environmental awareness from a young age. For a born and bred Brummie, I am an avid lover of the outdoors and go for regular walks with my dog in country parks. I am also a member of two South Birmingham-based charitable arts groups and regularly attend local community events with my daughter, who is obsessed with upcycling her old clothes!

You can also find me at my local gym, in either the swimming pool or sauna and love going to live music and comedy gigs.
