SWM Environmental Policy

Sustainability West Midlands (SWM) is a not-for-profit company which aims to provide sustainability advice to the leaders of the West Midlands through policy advice, project support and events for our cross-sector members and sharing success through our communications.

We operate as a micro-business (less than 10 employed staff) from an office located in central Birmingham. We also use a range of associates and members to deliver our work programme.

SWM recognises and is committed to meeting our duties under environmental legislation and adoption of high standards of environmental management. We are also committed to promoting environmental good practice and resource efficiency to ensure our services meet the needs of our customers and through our mission of “Providing sustainability advice to the leaders of the West Midlands”

To achieve this aim we will:

  • Act in line with all relevant environmental legislation and codes of practice, for example the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and other requirements which apply to SWM.
  • Prevent pollution and reduce resource use, especially through our business travel choices, office operations, and procurement.
  • Promote and monitor our values statement of being respectful – we respect nature’s limits and the needs of future generations.
  • Communicate and train our staff, volunteers and contractors in the implementation of this policy.
  • Continual improvement through target setting and annual reviews and reporting built into our business plan and performance systems.

Our policy is implemented through an action plan that covers:

  • Office operations of business travel, energy, waste, and procurement.
  • Support for our host organisation’s environmental management system, and our staff and volunteers commuting.
  • Reporting within our business review as part of our annual accounts.

This policy has the support of the SWM Board. The Chief Executive has overall responsibility for implementation. Compliance and awareness of this policy is the responsibility of all employees, volunteers, associates, and contractors.
