The Event

Residents in East Birmingham are invited to bring in their household appliances and bicycles for free repairs at the next repair café event, organised by ReCognition Circular.

A repair cafe is a free meeting place where community members can bring broken items and work with skilled volunteers to fix them.

The café is able to fix bicycles, clothing, household electronics, computers and laptops. Appliances can include electric fans, lamps, radios, games consoles, toasters, kettles, vacuum cleaners, rice cookers etc)

ReCognition Circular aims to tackle digital exclusion and e-waste. They do this upskilling digitally excluded individuals and working with community groups to grow awareness. The repair café is one such initiative.

The café operates by matching appliances with volunteer repair experts. The volunteers are able to fix basic repairs that don’t require replacement parts, simple maintenance tasks, diagnostics and troubleshooting with items where the fix involves reattaching, resoldering, or adjusting existing components

The volunteers cannot repair items requiring replacement parts, devices with significant internal damage, and smashed phone screens unless people bring in appropriate replacement parts.

Speaking about the  event, ReCognition Circular chief executive David Abosch said:  “Following the tremendous success of last month’s Repair Café, we’re excited to welcome the community back for another day of sustainable solutions.

“Before the Repair Café, we’re hosting a community litter pick along the River Cole and Grand Union Canal in the morning, followed by a free lunch at St Cyprian’s Memorial Hall.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to take action for the environment while connecting with your community.

“Booking is essential—join the repair revolution today!”
