The event
The construction sector has been hesitant to embrace sustainability and innovation opportunities open to it. The Midlands has the potential to buck this trend with its strong and thriving sustainable construction sector and demonstrable research and development capabilities that could support it to innovate. This is where the Sustainability and Innovation Group of CE Midlands comes in. The group will help to encourage this thriving sector to innovate and be more sustainable, address the barriers and gateways to innovating and explore appropriate practices and support.
This new group will be Chaired by Noel Street of 3D Reid Architects and West Midlands Chair of the
Construction Industry Council. Support will be provided via the
Innovation Alliance for the West Midlands and
Sustainability West Midlands who already work in partnership on innovation and sustainability matters in the West Midlands.
The afternoon of 5
th November will comprise:
2.00-4.30pm Workshop to shape emerging, large-scale collaborative activities with the potential to significantly impact business innovation and productivity in the Midlands region. By contributing you will gain early insight into important regional demand-led innovation initiatives that could benefit your business/ organisation. The workshop will consider:
- Demand-led innovation and why is it important to stimulate it in the West Midlands/ Midlands?
- CDIS (The Consortium for the Demonstration of Intelligent Systems) is an ambitious programme to position the region at the vanguard of development, demonstration and adoption of intelligent (and integrated) systems through collaborative feasibility, pilot and technology showcasing activities. Initially it will focus on tackling barriers to exploiting intelligent systems to solve ‘grand challenges’ around mobility, health and energy.
- CITEC (Cross-Industry Technology Exploitation in Clusters) will support collaboration within and between supply chains to develop innovative new product and process technologies, focusing on five key Midlands industries (Next Generation Transport, Medical Technologies, Food Processing, Energy and Low Carbon, and Sustainable Construction).
- West Midlands 5G was recently announced as a multi-million pound, three city trial of new high speed connectivity that will pave the way for the future rollout of 5G across the UK. But what new 5G applications and services are we best placed to trial at scale?
4.30-4.45pm Tea/ coffee break
4.45-6pm Inaugural meeting of Construction Excellence Midlands Sustainability and Innovation Group, exploring terms of reference and interest of the group to allow targeting of future meetings.
