The event itself
Many technical solutions to climate change are already well established but winning the hearts and minds of people can seem an uphill struggle. This course will show how a people-centred, community-focussed approach to tackling climate change can overcome the suspicion many people feel towards mainstream initiatives and inspire people into action through trusted community networks.
Aims of this Course
The course will explore how to set up, run, and maintain a successful ‘Low Carbon Community’ initiative. It will provide a practical and informative introduction to develop the student’s understanding of how community action can engage greater numbers of people in carbon reduction activity such as the Birmingham ‘Green Deal’ as well as contributing to wider economic and social renewal. Students will learn good practice in engaging communities on climate change, energy efficiency and explore the relationship between social justice and climate change.
Type of learning
There is a range of flexible delivery methods and contact time, including workshops, site visits, lectures and online learning. The course takes about six months to complete, 20 hours of Group time and 30 hours of private study.
Assessment
The assessment includes individual and group work. Students will be set practical projects as well as essays and will be encouraged to express their own views on what we mean by just solutions to climate change and sustainable living.
