The launch of ‘DESIGNING ZERO CARBON BUILDINGS Using Dynamic Simulation Methods’ will be presented by Dr Ljubomir Jankovic, Reader in Sustainable Design at Birmingham City University.

Recently published by Routledge, this book is a significant milestone in the development of this area of research.

As we become increasingly aware of the causes and consequences of climate change, there is a sense that we are dealing with an almost impossible problem to solve; that our targets for zero carbon buildings are far in the future; and that our targets are hard to achieve.  This book develops a structured method for zero carbon design and demonstrates that it is perfectly possible to design new or retrofit zero carbon buildings today, using existing technologies, and with substantial financial returns.

The book has been endorsed by Professor Brian Ford, Chair in Bioclimatic Architecture at the University of Nottingham, and by our own Professor Ruth Reed, President of the RIBA 2009-2011. Professor Ford said: “There are several books which treat the topic of low or zero carbon buildings but none of them link it to dynamic tools and I don’t know of any book that covers this topic from the same prospective”. Professor Reed added: “This is a book that students and practitioners cannot afford to ignore for the benefit of their clients, future generations and the planet”.

The book makes a case for change of our perceptions that we are dealing with an impossible problem to solve, a change of our business and economic models, and a change of our attitudes towards zero carbon design and zero carbon living.  One chapter of the book is a case study, which uses the Zero Carbon House in Birmingham as a prime example of what can be achieved, and the launch will be an opportunity to see this first hand.

Drinks and light refreshments will be served at the event.
