The Event

For net zero to be reached, adaptation must happen. Adapting to current and predicted changes to our climate, both at the national and local levels, are vital across the society and economy and action needs to be taken across central government, local government and beyond.

Appropriate governance and decision-making is essential to ensure that leadership teams and elected officials are aware and understand sustainability and climate risk for local areas and appreciate the importance of resilience measures to support adaptation to both extreme weather events and incremental changes to our environment.

Adaptation often takes the form of either:

  • Building Adaptive Capacity (BAC) where you need to develop the internal capacity to respond effectively to climate change. This means compiling the information you need and creating the required governance and organisational conditions to undertake adaptation actions.
  • Delivering Adaptation Actions (DAA) where you undertake critical actions to address organisational vulnerability to climate risks and exploit positive opportunities that may range from simple low-tech solutions to large scale infrastructure projects.

This session will highlight local government examples and guidance to help you to develop capability and capacity to implement adaptation action plans, strategies, and projects. It will assist your organisation and local place with tackling sustainability-based vulnerabilities in the face of growing hazards and risks.
