Target Audience
For those who would like the latest information on topics such as the Green Deal, or who missed out on the training on planning for low carbon development delivered as part of the West Midlands Local Authority Low Carbon Economy Programme in 2011, West Midlands Councils, Improvement and Efficiency West Midlands and Sustainability West Midlands are offering a free training event for Local Authority officers.
The event itself
Energy prices are rising and increasingly variable, hitting households and businesses alike. At the same time, Government is working to promote energy efficient buildings and a secure, reliable and sufficient supply of energy for the UK. Local authorities across the country are examining how they can ensure that new developments are energy efficient and cheap to run for occupants. Renewable energy is only part of the solution. Intelligent, energy efficient building design can greatly reduce the need to use energy in the first place.
The training aims to introduce officers to low carbon buildings, low carbon energy, planning for low carbon development and new initiatives such as the Green Deal and the Energy Company Obligation (ECO).
The all day session on Thursday 29 November 2012 will give an overview of the role of planning in the development of a low carbon and well-adapted area. It is aimed at officers working in areas such as planning, development management, building control, climate change and energy (though any officer is welcome to attend), and will provide an introduction to planning for low carbon developments, catering for those with relatively little prior knowledge and those with some existing knowledge.
The session will cover:
- The UK policy context for low carbon development and climate resilience;
- The principles of low carbon design;
- An overview of low carbon energy supply technologies;
- Economic and financial aspects of low carbon development;
- New Government initiatives such as Green Deal and ECO;
- An overview of climate adaptation methods;
- The national planning policy context and local planning policies for low carbon development and climate resilience;
- Toolkits, help available and useful sources of information.
Refreshments and lunch will be provided.
