The event
The NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy recognised that procuring in a low carbon way is a major challenge. 60% of the NHS England total carbon footprint is associated with procurement of products and services, with carbon emissions associated with the extraction, processing, assembly, packaging, transport, storage and handling of products and materials that are consumed directly and indirectly by service providers. Reducing these carbon emissions will be a significant challenge. It will require creative thinking around how to deliver health and social care now and into the future. Substitution, innovation and effective engagement with suppliers will all become significant elements of carbon reduction strategies. This workshop will provide delegates with an overview of the information and tools available to help during the procurement process. Delegates will hear from David Pencheon at the SDU regarding research and support on sustainable procurment, NHS Trusts that have integrated sustainability into their procurement decisions, and other organisations that can provide support in this area including network sponsors, Skanska. It is also a great opportunity to network with your peers and learn from their experiences.
Audience
This workshop is for members of our NHS Sustainability Network and Sustainability and Public Health networks. Others involved in procurement from the local authority, public health or university sectors will also be considered.
