The event itself
MADE’s Talking Cities lectures series has teamed up with the Birmingham School of Architecture, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design Postgraduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture lecture series to bring you “A guide to the new ruins” talk from Owen Hatherley (journalist and the author of Militant Modernism and A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain).
On his talk for this lecture series Owen said: “British cities underwent extensive ‘regeneration’ throughout the New Labour years, which are extensively criticised as built ideology in my book A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain. But how do these projects stand up now that the funding has been cut off, and their instruments dismantled? In the context of massive cuts, is there anything worth defending about the stalled and cancelled projects, or will wasteland and empty flats by the main legacy? My talk will consider these questions partly with reference to Birmingham’s own case”.
Also see “The Softer Side of Sustainability” talk by Martha Schwartz on 11 May 2011.
