The event itself

Geoff Mulgan CBE, Director of the Young Foundation, will explore the Conservative Party’s concept ‘The Big Society’. During the national election one of the stark contrasts between the Conservative and Labour parties’ manifestos was the differing emphasis on society and the state.

The Conservatives proposed to build a ‘Big Society’ based on responsibility and respect, creating a smaller state with a bigger society. With a coalition government in place what will this now mean for reforming public services, civil society and the culture of politics in Britain?

Previously Geoff worked in the UK Prime Minister’s office and Cabinet Office as Director of Policy, Head of Government Strategy Unit during 1997-2004 and before that founded the influential think tank Demos.

He is a Visiting Professor at LSE, UCL, Melbourne University and the China Executive Leadership Academy. He also worked as a part time adviser to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in Australia. His latest book is The Art of Public Strategy: mobilising power and knowledge for the common good.
