With more than 30,000 homes across the West Midlands, Citizen is one of the region’s largest not-for-profit social housing businesses.
Their vision is to create places where people are proud to live and work. Their federal, group structure allows them to combine all the benefits of being a large organisation, with the close connections and capacity to meet customer needs and invest in local communities.
Citizen employs a full-time Sustainability Co-ordinator to oversee environmental management and fuel poverty support for the group. In addition they have a dedicated full-time energy advisor who delivers energy efficiency advice through home visits. They have insulated the vast majority of their older stock and continue to seek financial support to complete this across the remaining properties, to reduce their residents’ fuel bills and increase thermal comfort.
They are members of SHIFT and have achieved environmental accreditation through that scheme, for their environmental management. The organisations is now focusing on influencing its supply chain in terms of environmental and social value, through procurement processes, working with partners to review its transport fleet and actively work to support its residents into employment.
Upon joining SWM in 2017, Citizen commented:
