This month SWM Board member Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Julia King, has been appointed to the cross benches of the House of Lords as one of four new non party political peers recommended by the Independent House of Lords Appointment Commission. Julia King stated: “It is a huge honour to be appointed to the House of Lords. I am looking forward to being able to contribute to debate, and the honing of UK legislation on important areas from my personal experience, including the UK’s role as a leader in climate change mitigation, the health of our research base and our higher education sector, as well as engineering skills, our capacity in high value manufacturing, and education and social mobility more widely.” Simon Slater, SWM Chief Executive commented: We recognised Julia as one of our original local green leaders. In her role on our board providing strategic advice she has helped us promote low carbon investment in the region, launch HRH Prince of Wales international climate change campaign, and strengthen the role of our science and innovation base in creating a low carbon economy. It is great to have someone of her expertise serving our region and the science community in the Lords. Can she sit next to Lord Lawson ? For the full press release from Aston University read on.
