Cycle initiative launched in South Birmingham

On Thursday 25 July Cycle South Birmingham will launch an exciting new scheme which will enable local residents the opportunity to get on their bikes with the introduction of free bike loans.

Thanks to a donation of bikes from Be Active Birmingham and funds donated by Northfield Ward Community Chest, the project will offer free one day loans to residents. In addition the scheme will also offer free maintenance courses and a “lazy Sunday ride” which will take place on the second Sunday of every month.

The initiative will be launched, today with an event at Northfield Ecocentre includes a bike ride along one of the cycle routes in south Birmingham ending at Masefield Community Gardens for a BBQ, free safety checks will be provided by Dr Bike through Centro’s Smarter Choices programme.

Georgia Stokes, Manager of Northfield Ecocentre and Project Manager of Cycle Northfield expressed her hope for the project saying “We hope it will encourage people to explore them confidently, whether for leisure or commuting.”

Any resident who would like to take advantage of the scheme will need to contact Northfield Ecocentre to check availability in advance. Take along proof of ID and address and the bike will be available.

Rebecca Debenham, Manager of Northfield Town Centre Partnership and project partner, explains that their long term aim is to offer loans of up to 6 months which she sees as a way for “people overcome travel barriers to employment”.
