The second phase of the Future Power Systems Architecture Project (FPSA) run by SWM members Energy Systems Catapult was launched on 23 June, at IET Savoy Place, to a diverse audience from across the electricity industry. Since the launch of the first phase, in summer 2016, much has changed. There is cross-industry recognition of the transformational changes we face as we move to a decarbonised and consumer-first world, if not yet consensus on how we should react to and enable this transformation. With the transformation being at the heart of FPSA, there was a real buzz of anticipation as people took their seats. The launch event included presentations and panel sessions on the main findings of FPSA2 and concluded with workshops that explored the transformation from different stakeholder perspectives. This allowed participants to see others’ perspectives and to start the vital conversations to build the shared vision going forward. Energy Systems Catapult now say that we need government and industry to move forward together to build and own this vision. FPSA has set out a future work programme to facilitate this and provide the underpinnings to make it happen, including trials and a transition to business as usual.
