SWM would like to congratulate our members who entered this year’s Green Gown Awards 2018, an event celebrating and rewarding green and sustainable initiatives in the higher education sector. SWM would especially like to commend members Keele University and Aston University for winning awards at the event. Keele University won the “Enterprise Award” for a start-up business by one of their students which operates a national fly-tipping online reporting system and improving recycling quantity and quality by providing more information to domestic users. Aston University won the “Research with Impact – Institution Award” for a scheme where seawater is used for cooling and irrigation in greenhouses (ideal for land near sea but prone to drought), powered by renewable energy. Keele University also won “Outstanding Leadership Team of the Year Award” for their work to integrate sustainability on every level, rather than simply having an overseeing sustainability director. This has enabled more parts of campus to think about sustainability and prioritise this.
