The WMCA has been successful in securing just under £1m of DEFRA funding to support their work on air quality. They’re looking for an Air Quality Lead to develop and deliver the WMCA’s air quality programme. The project will focus on the following three areas:

  • The installation of air quality monitors across the region to support monitoring of PM2.5.
  • The creation of a West Midlands wide air quality website, to disseminate air quality information across the region.
  • The delivery of detailed behaviour change campaigns across the 7 constituent local authorities

You will manage this programme of work, ensuring that the project is delivered on time and to budget, with all milestones achieved. This will involve working with a range of stakeholders, including national government, local authorities, businesses, communities, funders and other stakeholders building on the excellent work already underway.

This is a rapidly growing area of work for the WMCA and you could be part of the journey in improving the air quality in the West Midlands.

This post is fixed term for two years.

About you

The WMCA are looking for someone with experience of working in air quality and understanding of policy in relation to this area of work. You’ll need to have good project management skills and be able to work with a range of stakeholders.

Essential experience:

  • Good project management experience and an organised approach to work
  • A clear commitment to creating a fairer, greener, healthier West Midlands with examples of how you have put this commitment into action and an understanding of relevant policy agendas and their significance
  • Have at least five years of directly related air quality experience
  • Experience of working in both local government and with environmental consultancy
  • A track record of managing large scale monitoring campaigns, including the deployment of low-cost sensors and the associated analysis of data.
  • Ability to deliver solutions and practical programmes of work with a wide range of stakeholders

Not a complete match?

WMCA is dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace that reflects the communities of the West Midlands. Studies show that women and people of colour are less likely to apply for roles if they believe they do not meet each requirement. If you are passionate about this role and want to make a difference to the West Midlands region, they encourage you to still apply. If you know you have the potential to do the job, but your experience does not straightforwardly sell you as the ‘perfect candidate’, really highlight your skills and those which are transferable.

How to apply

Please upload an up-to-date CV and supporting statement which demonstrates how you meet the essential criteria for the role.

WMCA’s application process is designed to be anonymised and ask all applicants to remove their name and avoid referring to protected characteristics, such as gender or age, when uploading their CV and Supporting Statement.

If you would like to discuss alternative methods to the online application as a reasonable adjustment, please contact the Recruitment Team (careers@wmca.org.uk) – they’re here to help.

The advertised salaries

The salary advertised is the scale point range for the job role. New appointments will normally be made on the lowest salary point, the minimum of the advertised salary range. In exceptional cases, this can be varied where necessary to secure the best candidate when a higher skill level and/or experience are applicable.

WMCA advertise in this way to demonstrate the incremental year-on-year increase employees can potentially receive up to the maximum salary point thereby offering progression to employees and rewarding them appropriately.
