An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Sustainability team on a 12-month maternity cover basis, as Environmental Manager. The team forms a part of the Corporate Services function.
The Environmental Manager is responsible for developing and driving forward WMFS’s environmental and sustainability strategies, working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, leading transformation within WMFS and the fire and rescue sector. The role requires the review and evaluation of current practices, to recommend improvements and ensure their current operations are compliant with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, as well as taking steps to ensure compliance into the future.
Responsibilities
- work with the Sustainability team and other departments to drive forward their sustainability agenda across the organisation
- create and drive the action plans underpinning the service-wide strategy to achieve net zero by 2041
- regular analysis of WMFS’s carbon emissions, their supply chain and other ESG factors, ensuring WMFS keep on track to meet their net zero target
- calculate and report on the carbon footprint and ESG factors of new and existing facilities for all internal /external data communications, for example WMFS’s reviews by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS)
- deliver clear presentations at all levels, including strategic. Lead workshops to influence behaviours and foster support for change
- liaise with a variety of departmental leads (such as commercial, training, response, estates, finance, learning development) to help implement environmental actions within all areas of the service. Coordinate, report and present on this activity
- work with departments, external stakeholders and agencies to secure sustainability-related funding.
Experience and skills
Essential skills or experience
- hold a recognised qualification at degree or equivalent level, in a subject area associated with the environment or sustainability
- experience in an environmental adviser or manager role (or equivalent)
- a record of accomplishment in developing and delivering carbon footprint strategy and reporting
- experience of working in carbon emissions accounting and implementing a net zero strategy
- a good understanding and knowledge of environmental legislation, net zero reporting guidelines and current research in sustainability
- a broad experience of undertaking environmental management and improvements in public and/or private sector operations
- an understanding of Microsoft O365 and associated platforms (Word, Excel, SharePoint, PowerBi), with analytical and problem-solving skills
- experience of report writing.
Desirable skills or experience
- full driving licence
- professional membership with recognised institution or governing body (such as IEMA), demonstrating knowledge and understanding in the areas of environment and sustainability, with associated CPD
- good knowledge and understanding of relevant national strategies, legislation and initiatives associated with the role.
