Johnson Tiles achieve second listing in The Sunday Times Best Green Companies Awards

Congratulations to Staffordshire Business & Environment (SBEN) members, Johnson Tiles, who have recently been named in The Sunday Times “60 Best Green Companies”.

“For a second consecutive year, Johnson Tiles have been listed in The Sunday Times Best Green Companies Awards rising from 27th out of 50 companies in 2008 to 25th out of 60 companies in 2009.  The company is the only tile manufacturer to be listed in the Awards in which the company’s energy saving measures, environmental strategies and manufacturing processes were assessed. In addition an online survey of company employees was undertaken to find out their awareness of the environmental implications of their work.

The submission by Johnson Tiles referred to the fact that the winter of 2008 – 9 was the coldest for over a decade which increased the demand for energy. However, various initiatives introduced in the last twelve months by the company to reduce energy consumption greatly helped to control the increase use of gas in particular. The combined effect of the energy savings measures is to have reduced the company’s overall CO2 emissions by 538 tonnes in a 12 month period.

The two big energy saving measures introduced last year were the waste heat recovery system installed on one of the large roller hearth kilns reducing gas consumption for the kiln by 10% and the modifications made to the gas heated driers on the tile presses reducing the driers gas consumption by 14%. Other measures have included the introduction of water saving devices throughout the company.

The employee survey revealed that the company’s environmental measures have gone down well with the employees and that they consider they are worthwhile (87% green score). Johnson Tiles employees are also aware of environmental impact that their work has and are encouraged by the company to think about energy saving and recycling.

The company received a specially produced award which is proudly displayed at the Stoke on Trent offices”.
