Mills & Reeve commits to net zero by 2050

As the latest step to minimising its impact on the environment, leading UK law firm and SWM member Mills & Reeve has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by at least 35% by 2031. The commitment is aligned with the Paris Treaty’s target to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. In practice, the aim is to reduce GHG emissions, which is the accepted standard for a net zero business. Neil Pearson, head of ESG & social value at Mills & Reeve, commented: “We’re really pleased that the firm is committed to playing its part in the fight to mitigate climate change, as part of our wider ESG strategy. But this is just a start. Like all businesses, there’s more we can do. “Over the coming months we’ll be looking at areas such as supply chain, travel and staff training, and over the longer term joining more collaborative alliances to see how much we can achieve working together with our own people, as well as other businesses and organisations, to hit our targets earlier.” Jessica Wilkes-Ball, sustainability manager at Mills & Reeve, added: “This commitment is a significant milestone for us, and a vital step towards validation of the progress we are making to reduce our environmental impact. The appetite and openness I have been met with at every turn has contributed to us being able to drive forward change for the firm.” Further to their net zero commitment, Mills & Reeve has also pledged:
  • A 90% reduction in emissions by 2050
  • To offset remaining emissions that cannot be eliminated
  • To validate all targets through the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)
The Mills & Reeve ESG committee is now working up a more detailed action plan and net zero strategy setting out exactly how the targets will be met.
