Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is ecstatic to announce that, with the support and work from the Sustainable Environment Team and all council services, they have adopted their new Sustainable Environment Strategy and Delivery Plan (SESDP).
The SESDP will deliver sustainable development within four key areas in the Council and borough:
- The Built Environment & Energy
- Travel & Transport
- The Natural Environment & Sequestration
- Engagement & Behaviour Change
The Strategy and Plan will tackle the issues the borough faces from Climate Change with realistic, timely and detailed ambitions in their Delivery Plan. The SESDP is a unique document for a local authority in that it is a living document that is reviewed every six months by senior leadership and Council members to ensure it continues to stay relevant until their ambitions are achieved.
The SESDP is deeply embedded into each different service within the Council. This is achieved by facilitating monthly working groups with services on sustainability and by identifying and developing service-focused delivery plans for those services to own and deliver their own actions in sustainability. Publicly, the new Strategy sets forth actions for the Council to engage with the public to embed their thoughts into the strategy as well as through engagement events like quarterly citizen assemblies.
The newly appointed CEO for Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council had this to say regarding the new Strategy and Delivery Plan:
The innovative strategy aims to create:
- a Net Zero Council by 2030;
- Net Zero borough by 2050;
- a more diverse and promoted natural environment;
- engagement with all relevant stakeholders from staff, residents, businesses and visitors to ensure that sustainability is embedded in everything they do in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
