This Skills Bootcamp from Birmingham City University will provide you with new skills, knowledge and climate literacy, all highly valued in the Net-Zero era.
What are Skills Bootcamps?
Skills Bootcamps are part of the government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee to help everyone gain skills for life. They are intensive short-term training courses that provide you with an invaluable opportunity to gain sought-after sector-specific skills.
Skills Bootcamps are funded by the Department for Education, so they are free to individual learners and at very low cost to employers.
What’s this course about?
The UK government is committed to decarbonise industry across all sectors and become net-zero by 2050. This means there is an urgent need across all industry sectors for employees with an understanding of sustainable strategies and how to apply them in real work contexts.
With the rapid shift required to meet the zero-carbon agenda, professionals with the requisite skills, knowledge and climate literacy are highly valued by employers.
Who’s the course for?
The course will suit practitioners in architecture and landscape architecture who are looking to develop additional focus in their professional expertise with the application of sustainability principles.
It is also ideal for designers, policy makers, planners and those working within the natural/built environment or product/design management.
What’s involved?
The course has been designed by leading academics, delivering a theory-based series of 8 day-long sessions, spread over 10 weeks. The teaching days are Friday and Saturday every third week, beginning on 20th January 2023.
You will attend seminars and presentations delivered by renowned experts at the Birmingham City University campus. There will be guided learning to help you apply the latest strategies, information and processes in order to develop an environmental and sustainable plan applicable to your own working environment.
What will I learn?
The course will provide solid grounding in the central tenets of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals including:
- Climate literacy
- Creating sustainable cities and communities
- Circular economy principles and sustainable materials
- Building and infrastructure re-use and retrofit
- Design for biodiversity

- Social and environmental justice
- Tools for systems thinking
- Leading sustainable change
