The Low Carbon and Environmental Technologies Industry Steering Group (LCSG) was set up by the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) to represent the voice of Low Carbon business in the West Midlands. The group will promote the utilisation of public funding and initiatives to drive measurable growth in the LCET sector in line with the Local Industrial Strategy. Interventions to support businesses are defined within the GBSLEP’s Low Carbon and Environmental Technologies Sector Action Plan. The Action Plan builds on the WMCA’s market opportunities and strengths identified in the Local Industrial Strategy, and will draw upon the foundations of productivity (people, skills & employment; infrastructure & environment; ideas/innovation; business environment; place) to drive and enable economic prosperity.
Function
The LCSG will engage local business leaders to oversee the development, prioritisation, and implementation of interventions designed to support the region’s low carbon businesses. Following the first steering group meeting in April 2020, a working group led by the elected Chair and Vice Chairs categorised a list of key interventions, and detail an addressable short-list of quick wins. The LCSG meets shortly to take the first decisions to support a Green Recovery in the region. A Green Recovery is absolutely necessary following COVID-19, and the LCSG will define the necessary steps to support local low carbon businesses build back better, securing clean growth for the region that will deliver energy transition, green jobs and low carbon commercial opportunity.
