As of 24 April 2020, SWM has decided to change the baseline year of all relevant metrics that we will be monitoring as part of our Roadmap to 2030 from 2020 to 2019 as a result of the significant data anomalies that will arise this year due to the impact of coronavirus. It has already been reported that carbon emissions and air quality levels are significantly lower than normal and as such do not represent ‘business as usual’ scenarios. Other factors could also be affected as the world’s population changes its behaviour massively. The directly affected priorities are Clean Air and Water, Sustainable Growth, Social Equity and Health and Sustainable Energy Use. Against each of these, we were planning to measure change between 2020 and 2030, but we will now measure this change between 2019 and 2030 instead. We will start reporting against all metrics in the Roadmap as soon as 2019 data for all metrics has been published, which is likely to be by summer 2021.
