Community Strand of the West Midlands Low Carbon Economy Programme

Organisations involved

Lead Partner – Sustainability West Midlands on behalf of Improvement and Efficiency West Midlands. Delivery Partners – Marches Energy Agency and Localise West Midlands.

Summary

This project formed part of the West Midlands Local Authority Low Carbon Economy Programme and has provided tailored advice, guidance and support direct to a selection of community-owned renewable energy projects to assist them towards successful implementation.  Alongside, training has been provided to a network of mentors to help promote and spread ideas, best practice and to support the delivery of community renewables projects.

Progress of the project

Applications were invited from groups and organisations that would like to receive support with their community-owned renewable energy project in Summer 2011.  Over 30 community groups were successful in applying for support, which was delivered around themes including simple and more complex solar electricity projects; community wind energy; community hydro (water) energy; energy efficiency in community buildings; training; and on-site renewable energy assessments.

Localise West Midlands also conducted a survey to provide a baseline picture of how much current activity there is in the West Midlands regarding community-owned renewable projects; and provided two days of training to around 18 mentors who have been recruited to help promote and spread ideas, best practice and to support the delivery of community renewables projects.

A summary report as well as a range of resources produced to support community groups with sustainable energy projects will be made available to download from this page.
