Overview
SWM was commissioned by Warwickshire County and Warwick District Councils to support the county’s brand new Public Sector Net Zero Group.
Aims
- To identify projects and activities that public sector organisations in Warwickshire can collaborate on and that can be scaled-up across the county to accelerate the transition to Net Zero and climate action.
- Identify potential funding sources to help implement these projects and other sources that may be appropriate for the Group to disseminate to other organisations in Warwickshire.
- To support those public sector bodies making slower progress, or that have less capacity, to enable them to work together with others to ensure they are contributing to Warwickshire’s overarching targets and ambitions on Net Zero and climate action.
- To promote leadership in the county on climate change, encouraging a range of stakeholders to take effective action now, while maintaining a long term perspective.
- To build a sense of common ownership and shared responsibility, helping to turn an overwhelming challenge into practicable, deliverable activities
Outputs
Throughout the course of 2022, we:
- Encouraged 15 organisations from across the county to join the Group.
- Developed a Terms of Reference, agreed by all Group members.
- Delivered four (quarterly) meetings, each attended by at least 20 individuals.
- Identified collaborative actions including energy audits and fleet electrification reviews.
- Brought in a range of expert external speakers including Cenex, Environment Agency, Coventry and Worcestershire Councils, and good practice from the Group members themselves.
- Themed the meetings based on what the Group wanted to gain more knowledge and learning on, including decarbonisation of buildings, climate change adaptation and electric vehicle infrastructure and fleet rollout.
“SWM’s help in setting up and running the Warwickshire Public Sector Net Zero Group has been a hugely important part of its progress so far. It has enabled all public sector bodies in the county to come together to accelerate the transition to Net Zero. SWM have brought in a range of expert speakers to help share good practice and has provided our group with a range of collaboration tools to encourage collaborative action. SWM has brought its broad network and knowledge to our public sector group and this has provided a solid foundation for our ongoing work. We look forward to maintaining a relationship with them in future.” – Steve Smith, Assistant Director – Commissioning Support Unit, Warwickshire County Council.
