Network Rail: New Street Station Redevelopment Green Credentials

Lead Organisation

Network Rail

Redevelopment of New Street Station, Birmingham – September 2015

The project team worked hard to gain green credentials for the project by working closely with the designers and regulatory bodies and through various recycling and energy monitoring initiatives.

The new station boasts a number of green credientials around a host of areas, including energy, waste, heating, lighting, water, materials, procurement and, of course, transport.

What SWM likes

We were involved at the very early stages of the development of the scheme with our members and Advantage West Midlands running workshops on setting out key sustainability issues for the project at the funding application stages. We also included New Street in a later sustainability progress review of key investment sites in the region. However plans are nothing without a strong champion and practical follow through into project delivery.

Therefore we admire the aspirational vision of Network Rail and project team who, from the outset wanted to transform the station into one with sustainability credentials not previously achieved for a major train station of this kind.
