‘Saving Lives with Solar’ Community Energy scheme

Lead Organisation

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM)

Overview

In partnership with SWM members Southern Staffordshire Community Energy (SSCE) and Stoke-on-Trent based, UHNM addressed both environmental and social issues by becoming the largest hospital-based solar panel site in the UK. Funded through private investments from staff, members of the public and businesses, the project generates income for SSCE’s community fund. This is then diverted to Beat the Cold to tackle the effects and causes of fuel poverty in the area.

What SWM likes

This project is a great example of partnership working and innovative thinking to benefit the environment, the economy and local communities. By working with local partners, UHNM have delivered a unique project which will have lasting benefits in relation to reducing fuel poverty and associated health impacts. They rightly deserve the awards they have won in relation to this project.
