Purpose of the report

The aim of this report is to highlight the state of the natural environment in the West Midlands, which provides an essential regional asset and foundation for our economic and social well- being. This report brings together a selection of evidence regarding the natural environment in the West Midlands and demonstrates that the natural environment in England is much less rich than 50 years ago and is not well placed to withstand the challenges posed by multiple demands on land. The report recognises the absence of accessible guidance to help people make informed sustainable choices.

Relevance to the region

The State of the Natural Environment in the West Midlands brings together for the first time the regional evidence we have about the current situation in our natural environment. With evidence from various physical and geographical sections, such as biodiversity and landscape form Natural England addresses many issues and challenges facing the West Midlands.

What SWM liked

We like the focus on the regional state of the environment and the urgency that change is necessary now, not just by government, but stakeholders, businesses and communities. We liked their approach to the challenge of change and their belief that ‘wildlife-rich landscapes are not ‘extras’. A healthy natural environment is the key to solving many of the problems that confront us in the 21st century.
