Strategic Travel Documentation and Transport Recommendations

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Overview

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHC) requested the support of SYSTRA in updating their travel plans, transport strategy and in implementing car park management strategies. This was driven by problems of overcrowding in the car parks at several sites across the Trust and the need to update policies ready for the introduction and standardisation of car parking charges for staff, visitors and patients as part of a Trust wide cost improvement plan. The client commissioned SYSTRA to assist with the process.

Results and achievements

  • Systra was able to identify a number of the issues and make recommendations as a result
  • BCHC were able to get direct feedback from staff around the issues they faced and their personal ideas for resolving this
  • Opportunities for future behaviour change were identified including encouraging staff to use public transport
  • New initiatives were introduced such as video-conferencing to enable administrative staff to occasionally work from home (thus reducing the need to travel in)
  • Systra recommended having an annual survey to update the BCHC each year on staff habits and give them an ability to assess how things have changed
