Weathering the Storm for Agriculture

A practical guide for farmers and land managers

Date of the report

February 2024

Author of the report

SWM, in collaboration with the Environment Agency and working with our Associate Mike Peverill

Purpose of the report

“Each year the impacts of a changing climate are felt ever more acutely. Farmers are at the sharp end of this, with businesses across the Midlands already struggling with the very real impacts of flooding, waterlogging, crop losses, high winds and increasingly erratic climactic conditions.” – National Farmers Union

This is a practical guide for farmers and land managers and is aimed primarily at those living and working in the Midlands though may also be useful to those further afield as much of the content can be applied elsewhere. It is designed to help farms and those who manage land become more resilient to extreme weather, better adapted to the changing climate and more attuned to potential new business opportunities that may arise from a warming world.

It was produced by Sustainability West Midlands in collaboration with the Environment Agency in 2023-24, building on the previous iteration originally published by Climate East Midlands in 2013.

The guide will help farmers to develop an adaptation plan for their farms, and enable those who directly work with the farming community to support land managers to do the same. It helps to assess farm vulnerability to climate risks, the sorts of impacts that could most affect agriculture and what can be done to adapt.
