SWM News August 2020 - Innovation is now more important than ever

Never have businesses in the West Midlands faced more testing times. First, we had Brexit, uncertainty around which is still on-going. Now, along has come a global pandemic that shut down swathes of our local economy. Never has there been such an onus on businesses to find innovative solutions to ensure survival, regeneration and growth.

Timely, then, is the development of the West Midlands Innovation Programme (WMIP), a collaboration between our long-term partners the Innovation Alliance for the West Midlands (IAWM) and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). The aim of the programme is to work with organisations across the region to drive up levels of demand-led business innovation. This will be achieved by delivering a stronger, more integrated innovation support offer to businesses, as well as by providing targeted support to enable access to national innovation funding.

To do this effectively, WMIP calls on innovation experts around the West Midlands to share their knowledge and expertise through the development of the ‘Virtual Innovation Team (VIT).’ Sustainability West Midlands is proud to be a founding member of the VIT, building on our existing relationship with IAWM. Our role is to support businesses in the low carbon sector to recover and grow by encouraging the use of innovative approaches, technologies and processes.

Much of this comes by providing opportunities for cross-sector learning and offering collaborative opportunities. We run the Innovative Low Carbon Working Group (ILCWG), and have done so since 2014, helping to catalyse new partnerships and collaborative activities to further innovation in the low carbon sector. Along with getting involved in this group (the next meeting is on 24 September), there are other ways you can connect to the innovation ecosystem and have your say:

  • Attend IAWM's next Policy & Practice event, taking place next Thursday and focusing on Innovating to Recovery.
  • The Grid, a new virtual platform at the testing stage, created to help support our regional innovation ecosystem and so that large corporates can pose challenges for SMEs to respond to.
  • IAWM’s Innovation Tracker, a celebration of innovation in our region to highlight the great things that are already being done by firms in the West Midlands.
  • We are also on the lookout for anyone who would like to shoot a short video focusing on ‘what does innovation mean to me?’ You know you want to!

There will be more to come, but for now, if you would like to get involved in or contribute to any of the above activity, or want support and guidance for your business, get in touch.

Alan Carr, Senior Sustainability Adviser, on behalf of the Sustainability West Midlands Team
