Trump
– The implications for a low carbon West Midlands?
In
the West Midlands, climate change will keep occurring, no-matter
who the US President is or whether we are part of the EU or not. In
parallel the low carbon market will also continue to grow, driven
by private investment and the global demand for clean, cheap and
reliable energy. Meanwhile, to meet the UK Climate Change Act
requirements we will need future standards that are stronger than
current EU policy. As UK Government special advisor Sir David King
said this month at the West Midlands Energy capital launch
“The demand for low carbon energy presents the best time to make
money since the industrial revolution”.
SWM
will continue our role in making sure our businesses and
communities maximise the benefit from this long-term energy
revolution, while not getting distracted from the present
uncertainty. We continue to share our sustainability and
resilience planning tools and experience with local businesses and look at
new opportunities, such as the UK industrial strategy.

- Mayoral
elections. SWM
chaired the follow up mayoral debate from our annual
conference at the recent Energy Capital launch this month.
Most candidates joined the leader of Birmingham City Council
in making a pledge for the region to be committed to producing
and using 100% clean energy by 2050. Meanwhile the Centre for
Cities has published its own Mayoral priorities.
- Energy
Capital. SWM is a partner,
along with many of our members, for this latest initiative to
help coordinate and promote local low carbon energy research
and business opportunities. The project is chaired by SWM
Board member Matthew Rhodes and was successfully launched to a
packed venue at the University of Birmingham on 15 February.
Watch out for more news over the year, and check out the new website.
- Resources.
SWM continue to draw on
our tools and members experience to help businesses identify
risks and opportunities associated with current uncertainty
around local, national and international policy. Thanks to SWM
members sben for letting us discuss this with their business
networks this month. You can view our presentation here.
