University College Birmingham

Based in the heart of the UK’s second biggest city, with over 10,000 students from around 90 countries, University College Birmingham is highly respected by employers and industry for providing career-focused education and training.

Fully inclusive, the University has a diverse student population, with around 70% of home students being based in the West Midlands wider region.

Some ways the university is supporting sustainability:

  • The University has invested over £150 million into its facilities over the past decade, including two new campus buildings that have won Royal Institute of British Architects RIBA awards for their sustainable features.
  • It also boasts the Centre for Sustainable Construction; an original Art Deco printworks building sustainably retrofitted, here, learners are trained on key skills that support employers and supply chains, crucially within an environment conducive to sustainable methods of construction including modular building and robotics.
  • By partnering with a local company, all campus waste is either recycled or processed into energy to assist in providing electricity to around 30,000 local homes within the county, ensuring that all campus waste is completely carbon neutral.

The University takes a holistic and serious view of its sustainability goals, working to embed and improve its environmental impact across campus, curriculum and community.

The sustainability strategy governs the action, flexing to meet the needs of our increasingly sustainability-minded students, staff and stakeholders.

On their membership with SWM, they say:

“The University knows just how important sustainability is to its students and staff: winning best university in the West Midlands at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2024, as well as coming out top in the region for student support (postgraduate and international), as voted for by students themselves, is a testament to that.

To support its Strategic Plan 2025-2030, the University continues to work closely with Sustainability West Midlands and in 2025, was proud to announce that it achieved accreditation as an Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP) training centre.”
