Overview
After engaging in conversations with their key contact as an SWM Member, it was identified that Solihull College and University Centre (SCUC) wanted some support to:
- Ensure key individuals within SCUC’s SLT and beyond were up to date with SCUC’s commitments to sustainability and understood the importance of their contribution to achieve these commitments and ensure a sustainable future.
- Equip themselves to drive forward their sustainability commitments successfully.
Activities
Following a discussion with Oliver Scholefield, Head of Sustainability, SWM set out a proposal with recommendations on how to deliver this support. Drawing on extensive experience from similar projects, SWM carried out a project consisting of the steps laid out below.
- Developed a sustainability strategic planning workshop in collaboration with the Head of Sustainability guided by existing information and context on Senior Leadership Team (SLT) understanding.
- Carried out internal stakeholder engagement with the SLT and other key individuals in order
- Delivered an initial engagement workshop followed by a sustainability strategic planning workshop with the SLT and other key individuals to ensure effective understanding, adoption and ownership of SCUC team members’ responsibilities around sustainability.
- Supported the enhancement of SCUC’s Sustainability Delivery Plan to include clearer steps required between now and 2030.
- Produced a report that reflects and appraises SCUC’s existing sustainability related strategies and progress to date, providing recommendations on suggested improvements and next steps based on the plans resulting from the workshops.
Outputs
The aforementioned report produced covered:
- An appraisal of SCUC’s current sustainability related strategies and completed projects to date drawn from the ‘context setting’ exercise;
- A summary of the stakeholder input as gleaned from the workshop;
- Recommendations on continuing the relationship between the Head of Sustainability and the SLT;
- Recommendations and suggested next steps for updating and completing actions within their delivery plan.
As well as the project report, SWM supported SCUC in using all the information gathered and engagement carried out in this project to produce an updated and enhanced version of the Sustainability Delivery Plan including:
- Recommended SMART (specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, time-bound) actions;
- Responsibilities assigned to specific teams within SCUC
- Existing examples for suggested actions from within and outside of SCUC and justifications where applicable.
