Committee on Climate Change: Phase out greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 to end UK contribution to global warming

The Committee on Climate Change has published a report looking into how the UK could phase out greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in order to help tackle global warming.

Given the sensitivity of the planet and the pressing need for action now, the committee has set out a number of proposals that could be implemented to help this happen through a combination of business activity, personal behaviour change, and government policy.

These include zero-carbon energy production, offsetting unavoidable emissions through tree planting, active travel and public transport use, policies ensuring industry is forced to remove GHG emissions. However, these requires large-scale change and is thought to lead to an opportunity cost in GDP of the UK.

It’s even thought that Scotland could hit zero-emissions by 2045 if it implemented policy and behaviour change soon enough.
