From April 24th-27th, Birmingham and the Black Country will be taking part in the 2026 City Nature Challenge – a fun, free, global challenge to see which city is wildest! Will you help us show the world how wild we REALLY are?
We are pleased to share details of the upcoming City Nature Challenge 2026. An exciting, free opportunity for individuals, communities and organisations to get involved in recording local wildlife with Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust.
Taking place from 24–27 April 2026, Birmingham and the Black Country (Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton) will once again join cities across the globe in a friendly competition to see which area can record the most wildlife.
How to take part
Getting involved is simple:
- Step 1: Take photos of wild plants & animals anywhere across Birmingham and the Black Country
- Step 2: Share your observations in the iNaturalist app.
- Step 3: Learn more as your finds get identified!
The app will also help identify species, making it a great way to learn more about local biodiversity while contributing to valuable environmental data.
Why it matters
The City Nature Challenge is not only a fun activity, but it plays an important role in helping to monitor wildlife and informs conservation efforts across the region.
In 2025, participants across Birmingham and the Black Country recorded over 12,500 observations and more than 1,500 species, ranking among the top areas in the UK. With even more cities taking art in 2026, including neighbouring regions, there is an opportunity to go even further this year.
Get involved
Whether you join a local event, explore a park, or record wildlife in your garden, every observation counts. Organisations and community groups can also host their own recordings events during the challenge period. We encourage businesses, communities and individuals across thee West Midlands to take part and help showcase the regions rich nature.
