Job opportunity – Community Co-operative Manager

Acocks Greener CIC is seeking a dynamic and driven Community Co-operative Manager to lead the establishment and growth of the SEBrum Energy Local Co-op in South-East Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about sustainability, community energy, and making a lasting impact on local energy production.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Setting Up the Co-op: Establish the administrative and operational infrastructure for the co-op, including record-keeping, financial tracking, and reporting to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Outreach and Publicity: Develop and implement a comprehensive publicity strategy to raise awareness and recruit members using social media, community groups, newsletters, press, and public events.
  • Community Engagement: Build relationships with local groups, councillors, residents, and key stakeholders to ensure the co-op is inclusive, transparent, and well-integrated within the community.
  • Recruitment & Volunteer Management: Lead membership and volunteer recruitment efforts, design effective onboarding processes, and manage induction campaigns to build a strong, engaged network.
  • Collaborating with the Management Board: Work closely with the board to design and implement strategies for the co-op’s rapid growth and success. Assist with internal and external communications and ensure proper governance.
  • Spreading the SEBrum Model: Share knowledge of the SEBrum model with other groups in Birmingham and beyond. Represent the co-op in various sustainability initiatives and projects.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay up-to-date on relevant energy regulations and work to ensure compliance with necessary frameworks like VAT, GDPR, and employment law.
  • Strategic Action: Translate the co-op’s strategic goals into actionable steps, such as policy development, recruitment, and outreach efforts, to ensure long-term success.

Skills and Experience:

  • Technical Knowledge: Ability to quickly learn and communicate general technical aspects of solar PV systems and energy generation. Hands-on technical or engineering expertise is an advantage.
  • Community Project Experience: Proven experience in coordinating community projects and managing diverse stakeholders.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, with experience in one-to-one conversations, public speaking, and clear, well-structured written communications.
  • Governance & Compliance: Familiarity with co-operative governance models and relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., VAT, GDPR, employment law).
  • Energy Transition Understanding: Understanding of the energy transition and its implications for local communities.
  • Results-Oriented: Demonstrated ability to translate strategic objectives into practical, measurable outcomes in complex settings.
