SWM members take the lead in WM smart energy!

The WM Smart Energy Cluster provides support and coordination for the region’s smart energy businesses, and SWM members are leading the way.

Smart energy systems are critical to realising Net Zero. As the energy system becomes more decentralised, digitised, democratised and electrified, we need to better enable flexibility in order to deal with peak demand. The West Midlands is home to significant smart energy system assets with a strong foundation of innovators, utilities, companies, and world-class research and innovation.

In the WM Growth Plan, clean energy industries are a significant potential driver of growth. The WMCA have therefore commissioned the Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) to lead the WM Smart Energy Systems Cluster. This cluster aims to unite businesses, innovators and other regional capabilities to ensure the West Midlands capitalises on the opportunity for a smarter, more flexible energy system, benefitting citizens and enabling regional businesses to lead this charge for the UK. The cluster is currently organising its work around three core areas; Smart Homes, Smart Heat and Smart Business.

Dr Beck Collins of SWM is on the Advisory Board of the Cluster and has worked hard to advocate the opportunities it provides to SWM members, personally recruiting over 10 SWM members to the cluster. At the last quarterly stakeholder meeting of the cluster, two SWM members, Green Assured and Purewave Form presented on behalf of the Smart Homes and Smart Business areas of work, demonstrating their leadership within the cluster and their commitment to driving positive change in the region.

A great example of the connections and opportunities that can be accessed through membership of SWM!
