Purpose of the report

This report focuses on business and biodiversity, promoting the incorporation of the value of nature into decision making in order to safeguard long-term economic growth. The report concludes by recommending that the Government must clarify the process by which natural capital is included in the national accounts and ensure proper scrutiny by an independent body, and that by the end of this Parliament, the Chancellor should present a draft natural capital budget alongside the fiscal budget.

Relevance to the region

The failure to address biodiversity loss will lead to estimated cumulative losses equivalent to around 7% of global consumption by 2050, which will inevitably impact the West Midlands region.  Long-term economic growth in the West Midlands will be made more possible when the value of nature is incorporated into decision making.

What SWM liked

By promoting the need to incorporate nature’s value into decision making, this report helps address the urgent matter of large economic losses associated with failure to address biodiversity loss.
