The funding programme supports councils with up to £20,000 to commission independent expertise for specific projects to tackle the effects of the housing crisis in local communities. This year, there will be a second strand aimed at councils who want to play a more direct role in building more homes in their local area but have minimal or no experience of doing so. This will be an action learning programme, giving participants the opportunity to explore which of the different routes to housing delivery will work best in their local area.

The LGA Housing Advisers Programme has previously been used to support sustainability projects such as retrofitting and developing low carbon build specifications.

From the Local Government Association website:

The Housing Advisers Programme is designed to support councils seeking to innovate in meeting the housing needs of their communities. The 2022/23 programme opens 29 September 2022 and will accept applications until 24 November 2022. In the previous five years of the Housing Advisers Programme we have supported over 150 projects across more than 300 councils, supporting a diverse range of projects from a variety of councils to help assist and advise local authorities seeking to address their housing, planning and homelessness challenges.

This year the programme will continue to fund the provision of bespoke expert support to councils – or groups of councils – wanting to transform the delivery of homes and places, the quality and security of existing homes and/or to prevent and reduce homelessness.

For the first time the programme will also have a second strand, aimed at councils who are keen to lead on the delivery of new housing but do not have a track record of housing delivery. Participants will work together in action learning sets to explore the different routes to delivering new homes and address their specific local challenges. The learning programme will also include expert input aimed at leaving participants well equipped to lead or facilitate the delivery of new homes in their area.

The programme will open for applications from councils in England at midday on 29 September 2022 and will close at 5pm on 24 November 2022.
