Lead Organisation

Sustainability West Midlands

Project Delivery team: Anna Bright (Project Manager), Andy Whyle (Associate), Debbie Ward (Associate)

Overview

The West Midlands Resource Reuse Network (WMRRN) aims to deliver cost and carbon savings for companies managing wastewater, sand and sludge waste streams by identifying reuse opportunities that divert the waste stream from disposal. The network is delivered on behalf of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

SWM were commissioned by ISL to support delivery of the network and provide stakeholder engagement and technical expertise.

Aims

WMRRN is a regional, facilitated programme based on the WMCA’s core policy objectives highlighting the following waste steams: wastewater sludge, sand and metals. Through a combination of site visits and events WMRRN assists businesses in the West Midlands region to identify and facilitate business opportunities to reduce these waste streams and deliver impact.

The WMRRN project enables ISL and SWM to provide support to companies managing these waste streams with the potential to generate impact including cost and carbon savings, new revenue streams, job creation, waste reduction, resource efficiency and social value creation.

Outputs

SWM primarily supported ISL with stakeholder engagement to raise awareness of WMRRN throughout our membership and wider stakeholders including manufacturers and the NHS.

SWM helped to design and deliver several resource matching workshops focussed on metals and sand, and also on cross-sector opportunities.

SWM also worked with individual organisations to provide information on opportunities for industrial symbiosis and with ISL to identify partners for material reuse.
