West Midlands Combined Authority: The economic impact of climate change

Lead Organisation

Paul Watkiss Associates, supported by Sustainability West Midlands (SWM)
SWM Project Delivery team: Alan Carr (Climate Change Adaptation Lead), Morgan Roberts (Project Officer), Ros Povilionis (Events & Partnership Officer)

Overview

The WMCA were keen to identify the potential economic impacts that climate change could have in the region should no adaptation take place. This involved quantifying the potential impacts based on looking at future climate scenarios combined with impacts from historical events to identify the potential financial and economic impacts that could befall the WMCA area if climate change takes hold as is expected. The work can help with business planning but also make the case to invest in adaptation measures.

Aims

  • To look at the financial impacts recent historical extreme weather events have had on the local economy.
  • To look at future scenarios to identify potential future costs to the economy.
  • To produce a technical and summary report that showcased the findings of this analysis.

Outputs

The Summary Report has been published by the WMCA and is accessible here.
