Roadmap 2020: Sustainable Development Priorities for the West Midlands Workshop

Purpose of the presentation

This presentation was given by Dr Simon Slater, SWM and Stephen Owen, URSUS and SWM on 30 March as part of the Roadmap for a sustainable region in 2020 project. The aims of this event were to:

  • Identify priority areas for activity to achieve the West Midlands Low Carbon Vision 2020.
  • Identify key actions to ensure progress on priorities.

The project hopes to address the following issues:

  • Sustainable Vision 2020 is in place, but there are no key steps or baseline to get there.
  • Currently there are too many regional sustainability priorities within too many documents.
  • There is a lack of clarity on where resources and partnerships should be focused to help Joint Strategy Investment Board (JSIB) and Strategy.

Relevance to the region

The Low Carbon Vision of the West Midlands covers the following key themes:

  • Housing and buildings – sustainable construction and retrofit.
  • Energy – low carbon energy, energy efficiency.
  • Waste – resource efficiency, waste infrastructure, behavioural change.
  • Transport – infrastructure, managing networks, behavioural change.
  • Low carbon jobs – stimulating markets, business development, skills.
  • Climate adaptation – building resilience to climate change.
  • Environmental assets – managing our land resource for food, biomass, carbon storage.

As there are many aspects to each of these themes it is necessary to decide what should be focused on to begin/continue progress in each area.

What SWM liked

We like that this presentation can be used as a guide to prioritising areas for action and as a resource of the list of priorities for the West Midlands.
