SWM and Environment Agency publish new resources on climate change adaptation

SWM has published two new documents aimed at helping a range of organisations adapt to climate change and improve their resilience.

Sustainability West Midlands have been working in collaboration with our members the Environment Agency for the past two years. Last year, we published the first ever West Midlands Climate Change Adaptation Plan. This plan sets out the climate change adaptation actions that should be considered for implementation by decision makers in the West Midlands, to ensure that our natural environment, people, infrastructure, buildings and businesses are prepared for the impacts of climate change, including greater incidence and severity of flooding, a higher likelihood of water scarcity and more intense and prolonged heatwaves.

We have expanded on this by publishing two new documents aimed at helping a range of organisations adapt to climate change and improve their resilience.

The first is called Weathering the Storm, a guide to help small businesses in the West Midlands understand how they could be affected by weather, including extreme events, and how they can improve their chances of a quick recovery.

The second is a suite of case studies for local authorities, highlighting what good practice climate change adaptation looks like in practice. This is published alongside an event we ran in November 2022 on the same subject.

We have also published the latest results of our Local Authority Sustainability Benchmark, which shows how the region’s councils are performing on sustainability matters, including climate change adaptation.

We recognise that climate change impacts are becoming more frequent and more significant in terms of their economic, environmental and social implications and, yet, policy, guidance and resourcing on a national scale is not keeping up with the pace of change. That is why we are doing our best to help organisations across the region to consider the issues associated with climate risk, provide advice and support on how they can improve their response to climate change impacts and projects they can consider.
